| Yes it is very safe. Money Changers will operate from small kiosks and booths all over Moscow (and Russia) and they make their profits from buying and selling currency. They buy it an one price and sell it at a slightly higher price and the difference is the profit margin that they make. Nearly all operators in Moscow are very professional, most are computerised and they count all currency in front of you (several times) using both money counters that you both can see and manually and most will also ask that you count the money yourself, before you leave to make sure that you agree. They display the rates that they offer and you can do your own calculations to make sure that the amounts they give you are correct (many even have a calculator on the outside of the cashier's window so that you can check the calculations) and they will nearly always give you either a computer printout or a receipt with the calculations. Many also do the calculations first and check with you that you agree, before proceeding. They are not fancy offices or shops, but small secure kiosks and booths, but that is why they can offer better rates than the banks. You do not need to speak much or any Russian to deal with them as everything is numbers, which you can both understand. |
