| The Metro is one of the best ways to travel around Moscow. It is very cost efficient (19 Rubles per single trip as at 1 January 2008 - with discount for regular travel) and the Metro network is very extensive covering most of the areas of Moscow and extending to some areas outside the MKAD. The Metro is divided in several different routes - all with different names and more easily to distinguish, different colours. The different routes run across the Moscow City region taking you to all areas and a number of the routes have intersecting stations where you can transfer to a different route and change direction, In addition, there is a circular route that cuts through all the other routes and allows you to change from the East side of Moscow to the West side or the North to the South and every route in between. The Metro does get very busy and can be very crowded during peak hour (more so on some routes than others), but during peak hour the trains will run about every 90 seconds, so there are lots of trains. There is no timetable for the Metro, as the trains run every few minutes during offpeak times and during the later evening there may be 10 or 15 minutes between trains. The Moscow Metro is also one of the world's most amazing architectural and cultural living museums, with some of the Metro stations being filled with sculptures, mosaics, paintings and designs that alone, are worth the trip to Moscow to see. The Metro is remarkebly clean for the several million passengers it carries each day, it is under constant video and Police surveillance and there are Police (Militsia) booths in many stations, making it generally a very safe place to be. Obviously you should exercise caution with your valuables, especially when the trains and stations are very busy. You will also find that there is an abundance of retail shopping found in the Metro stations, along with plenty of food and drinks. With several million people using the Metro each day, the numerous small kiosks and booths in the underground passageways that provide access to the Metro, have very good passing traffic to promote their goods to. |
