Most of the banks in Moscow are Russian banks. There are numerous banks and they are all controlled by the Russian Central Bank, with strict regulations concerning money laundering and other illegal activities. There are some major international banks in Moscow including CitiBank (which has a massive presence), Raiffeissen Bank (which is also substantial) and HSBC Bank is due to start retail banking in Moscow soon (as at January 2008). A number of European banks are seeking to enter the Russian market in the future, and most of them will enter by way of acquisition of a local Russian bank. The largest bank in Moscow (Russia) is Sperbank - the State owned bank, which has about 50% of the total banking market (Sperbank has an excellent network of ATM's that work with most debit and credit cards). |
